A South German car manufacturers plant, its headquarters and its subsidiary locations are spread over an area of 50 km in diameter. Every quarter, an enterprise wide employee meeting is being held. All employees, including those from the subsidiaries and headquarters, are invited to join. Because of the traffic circumstances, the trip to the meeting is often longer than the actual meeting itself and due to this, many employees are not able participate and consequently stay away. To reach more employees the employees‘ council asked the IT department to assess the possibility of live streaming the meeting.

Solution

All sites of the car manufacturer are interconnected through a VPN network. Unfortunately the available bandwidth at some of the smaller sites is limited. Therefore the transmitted video signal should have a low bitrate but still offer a good image quality. To achieve this the audio/video encoding is being done by a ENC-400 with H.264 encoding. The use of Multicast was not possible in the available network infrastructure. Therefore MC-Route is handling the stream distribution over VPN to the individual sites.

An IPTV Set Top Box is being used as receiver and provides both HDMI and analog audio and video outputs. Depending on the site a monitor or projector is being used as display. In the headquarters building the software XPlayer is used as receiver.
