A university hospital wanted to have a direct live interactive low latency HD link between operating theatres, several classrooms and the chief physician’s office. In both cases it should be possible to have a bi-directional communication. To save on costs, the available IP network should be used for the transmission.
DVB Signal
Übertragung digitaler Inhalte von Fernsehen, Radio & Co. über Satellit, Kabelnetze oder terrestrische Senderketten

MC-TRANS
In the operating room the available HD-camera of the overhead lamp was used and connected to a ENC-400-HDSDI encoder. The audio signal comes from a mixer with automatic volume control that is connected to the microphone. The encoders ingests the compressed AV signal into the IP network. In the classroom the video signal of the DEC-300 was linked to a projector and the audio signal to the speaker system. In the Chief physicians office the PC software XPlayer was installed. A PC with a headset was sufficient. To minimize the latency both encoder and decoder were configured in low-delay mode of about 250ms. To enable flawless communication with the students in the classroom and the chief physician the ENC-400 features an audio return channel. Changing connections between different operating theatres, class rooms and offices can be done in a browser. Both the encoder and decoder provide a secured web interface that is accessible through the IP-network.
By using the IP Network as an AV matrix, the university hospital was able to implement a very flexible live interactive video connection between the operating rooms and the classrooms and lecture halls. This eliminated the need for a very expensive fiber or copper point-to-point connection.
This solution can be extended with endoscopic cameras and other imaging equipment in the operating room. A need that was already identified.
